Middle Schoolers Planned Armed Takeover, Cops
Say Feb. 11, 2000
By Richard Zitrin
POLLOCK PINES, Calif. (APBnews.com) -- Sheriff's investigators
have foiled a plan by seven middle-school students to take their
school's 16 teachers hostage in an armed takeover, authorities said
today.
The Sierra Ridge Middle School seventh-graders planned to take
homemade smoke bombs and stolen guns to the school to carry out
their plot, which was intended to gain them media attention before
they ran away from home, said El Dorado sheriff's Sgt. Hal Lamb.
Fellow students got wind of the plot and alerted school
officials, who contacted the sheriff's office Wednesday morning, he
said.
Three of the boys were arrested and charged with conspiracy to
commit a crime and making a terrorist threat, Lamb said. Those boys
-- two 13-year-olds and a 12-year-old -- are being held in the
juvenile detention center.
Their names were not released because they were charged as
juveniles.
The other four boys were released to the custody of their
parents. All seven were suspended from school, Lamb said.
