G.O.P.’s New Gay Face

On the day the Log Cabin Republicans announced that Patrick Guerriero will become its new executive director, the Washington Post ran a story featuring two leading G.O.P. Senators who announced that they would push a law that would allow discrimination based on sexual orientation by some employers. Welcome to Washington, D.C. “I thought it was terrific reminder,” said the 34-year-old Guerriero. “We wouldn’t need a Log Cabin Republicans organization if issues around civil rights and equality were resolved.”

Nod to the Right

With just over a month to go before Republicans take over both houses of Congress, the Bush administration and some Republican members of Congress are signaling that they will advance legislation which could override existing state and local laws that ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. “It’s exactly what we’ve been afraid of,” said Lorri L. Jean of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. “The Bush administration now thinks it has carte blanche to run roughshod over the GLBT community and others.”
