"I never give them hell. I just tell the truth and they think it's hell."
- President Harry Truman

GET THE FACTS !

DID YOU KNOW?

  1. Less than 1/3rd of violence (assault, robbery and rape) toward women is committed by intimates and other relatives; most serious violence is committed by either unrelated acquaintances or strangers. As the number of unattached males goes up, violence toward women increases. (Source: Marianne W. Zawitz et al. 1993. "Highlights from Twenty Years of Surveying Crime Victims." Washington, D.C. Bureau of Justice Statistics.)

  2. Of the violence toward women that is committed by intimates or other relatives, only 10% involves a current spouse, whereas 42% involves a close friend or partner and another 12% an ex-spouse. (Source: Ronet Bachman. 1994. "Violence Against Women." Washington, D.C.: Bureau of Justice Statistics, p.6.)

  3. Marriage seems to be a strong safety factor for women. Recent surveys of violent crime victimization (1979-1987) have found that only 12.6 married women per 1000 (1.3%) fall victim to violence, compared to 43.9 never-married women per 1000 (4.4%) and 66.5 divorced or separated women per 1000 (6.7%). (Source: Caroline Wolf Harlow. 1991. "Female Victims of Violent Crime." Washington, D.C.: Bureau of Justice Statistics, p.4.)
