Three Alexandria residents are accused of abusing mentally handicapped clients while working at Pinecrest Developmental Center in Pineville, Rapides Parish sheriff's detectives said.

Arrests of the three - made Monday and Tuesday - are in connection with separate incidents involving the employees and clients at the state facility for mentally handicapped, Detective Bill Whittenberg said.

Geraldine Mbonefor, 30, of 1715 Bryn Mawr, Shoneque Augustine, 23, of 2403 Orange St., and Alveldria Williams, 26, of 3716 14th St. each face a charge of cruelty to the infirm.

Detectives said the administration at Pinecrest was helpful and cooperative in the investigations.

All of the victims are severely handicapped.

Mbonefor was arrested Monday, accused of wrapping a male patient in a comforter and hitting his head, detectives said. Witnesses also told investigators that the 37-year-old victim had been dragged down a hall and kicked by Mbonefor. The complaint was filed in March 2003.

In February 2003, investigators received a complaint that Augustine was abusing a 50-year-old female patient at the facility. Augustine was assigned as the caregiver for the patient and allegedly hit her, spun her on the floor and yelled derogatory things at her, Whittenberg said.

In addition, witnesses told investigators that the patient was on a strict diet and was being overfed by Augustine, detectives said. Augustine was arrested on Tuesday.

Williams allegedly was caring for a 27-year-old patient while the patient was temporarily in a local hospital.

Investigators said two nurses witnessed Williams slap the patient and pull the patient's hair.

Williams was booked on Tuesday.
