PHOENIX (AP) -- A woman convicted of killing three of her
children was provisionally sentenced to six consecutive life
sentences. A federal district judge ruled Thursday that Elvira Charley will
remain at a prison hospital in Texas for now. Doctors have said she
suffers from depression, and she will not be formally sentenced
until she gets better, said Harriet Bernick, spokeswoman for the
U.S. Attorney's Office. Charley was convicted in January of shooting to death two of her
daughters, Ganelle, 11, and Raedelle, 9, and her 10-year-old son,
Jerelle. Authorities found them dead in her home on the Navajo
Reservation on Jan. 1, 2002. Prosecutors said the shootings were revenge for her husband's
relationship with another woman. Charley's three youngest children, who were in the home at the
time, were unharmed.
