Mother gets her six kids back after serving time for child abuse

(5/21/03 - LIBERTY CO.) — Some foster parents in Liberty County say six kids are in danger after a judge returned them to their abusive mother.
Foster parents have taken care of the six
children since the seventh sibling, a 13-year-old, was beaten with a
40-inch board two years ago. The children's mother, Catherine Kegg,
pleaded guilty to the crime and has since completed parenting and
anger management classes in prison.
"This is more than a one time lose control and spank your child,"
said Barbara Shinell with Liberty County CPS. "It was to us, a
history of serious injury to the children."
The lawyer for the six kids says this was not an easy case for
her, but in the end, she made the recommendation to reunite the
family and hopes she made the right decision.
"It scares me that a mother can lose her temper that much," said
attorney Michelle Mangum-Merendino. "I don't have a crystal ball. No
lawyer does. But I had to make a decision of the facts in front of
me."
CPS says it will watch the family closely every week. The
13-year-old victim will not go back to live with his parents.
The children's father remains in jail for a separate crime. He
was also convicted once before for child abuse in Minnesota.
